I teach math to 5th and 6th graders in a very impoverished area. (88% free/reduced lunches...majority being free)

I am shocked that students get to 5th grade not knowing their multiplications facts. It is hard to move on to fractions, etc. without mastery.

However, after doing home visits, I concur with Ruby Payne, if a child has to worry where it will sleep or what it will eat--the last thing on his/her mind is going to be math.

The US needs to get with the program and get our school sysytems back on track!

I know that we can't get proper education if we are on the midst of poverty, but, I truly believed that

Poverty usually equates to immigration, often illegal immigrants in our disadvantaged districts. My school taxes are ridiculous in NJ and I don't have any kids. (Went from $3800 in 94 to $10K on a plain vanilla ranch home in NJ). I must pay from my wallet for the results of these immigrants being mid thrust from their loins in other business. Can someone explain to me how this is fair or right?
